What's Up

This week in sixth grade, we have been preparing for our math test on multiplying and dividing fractions. We finished reading chapter 8 in A Wrinkle in Time. During tech, the girls played code games in Hour of Code. The entire school is beginning to practice for our Christmas program that will be on December 17, next Tuesday. Our class is singing The First Noel. Last week, a elf named Rudy dropped off some pretty decorations for our classroom. We put bow on the windows, snowflakes on he closet doors, tinsel along the board, and a wreath and giant stocking on the outside of our classroom door. Chris taught the whole class how to make circular snowflakes, which we taped up on the closet along with the other glitter covered snowflakes. In Social Studies, we are learning about the Ancient Indians, and how they built the first, bathroom/sewage system.

Our Bahiti Mummification Process Update

This is a picture of week 1, week 4 and week 11.  We are performing one last burial for Bahiti today and will be checking in on  him again in a few months.  Stay tuned!

Entering December

This week in sixth grade we have been working hard. On Tuesday we had a math test with multiplying fractions. During tech time we practiced how to use spreadsheets and how to make graphs with google drive.  We are making examples with lunch counts and seeing how much lunch counts are per day of the week . This spreadsheet is making us more organized and taking advantage of technology. Sixth grade is very excited about the Christmas program! The Christmas program is going to be on the 17th of December at the time  7:00pm. We are going to be singing the traditional song Noel.  We have now entered the season of Advent.  We are having a prayer service with the whole school celebrating this time of year.

Update about Sixth Grade!

We have just finished reading the poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, and started reading the book A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'engle. This book is a Science fiction book about time travel. We have only read a few chapters so far, but maybe in a few blog posts we will be finished! 

In Math, we have finished learning about Prime Factorization and we are now moving on to fractions! We are starting off with multiplying fractions, but we hope to get to dividing fractions very soon!

In other news, we have just finished our Fall semester STEM classes! Our showcase was held yesterday Wednesday November 20th. Parents, visitors, and other classes in our school came in to observe all of our games and presentations! It was a great 6 weeks of STEM and we all hope that Spring semester STEM classes will be just as great! 

Last Monday, we had a speaker come in all the way from Liberia Africa. Macintosh, a man who grew up in Westpoint, the poorest neighborhood in Liberia, came to speak to the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders about his inspiring story and the organization he has put up for suffering girls in Liberia. His organization educates girls living in poverty in Liberia. We hope to one day help those girls and contribute to their company.

Rorsarch Note Cards

Use your book (p. 418 and on) for a reference on how to make note cards

As a reminder...

Your note cards must include:

1. The source where you got the information.
*Make sure to include the author, title of the work, the website, name of the book, etc
*You will need this for your works cited
*Make sure to keep track of where you get ALL of your information

2. The information written out that you think will be helpful for your research paper

3. These can be done on index cards, on google drive, word, binder paper, whatever is easier for you.  Stay organized is what is very important!!

Current Events How To

Directions: Choose a news source and write a summary of an article.  It must include the title, date, author, section, and source of the article.  Answer the questions: who, what, where, when and why in describing your article.  You must do at least one article from each section before repeating.  You cannot do all of the “choose your own” in subsequent weeks.  Check each section off as you go.

Rorschach Directions

Rorschach Test Research Project

Directions: Write a report on the Rorschach test.  It should be five paragraphs long and have a good beginning, middle, and end.  You need to have an outline first that is approved by me before you write the final draft.  Make sure to include a works cited and keep track of where you get your information.  The outline and final draft should be shared with me using google drive.

In addition, create an ink blot using paint and ask three people what they see. Record your observations. Did all the people see the same thing? Could you see all the pictures that the other people saw? Do you think this test says anything about personality? Why or why not?

Outline

You need to clearly show what the topic sentence, details and concluding sentences are going to be.  You are not writing your entire report here, but organizing your information.

Final Draft

The first paragraph is your introductory paragraph and should tell readers what they are going to write about, but not have all the details.

The middle three paragraphs are where your details are.  Each paragraph should be organized with all the same information in one paragraph.

The fifth paragraph is your concluding paragraph.  This summarizes everything you wrote about.  

Each paragraph should include:

1. Topic sentence

2. Three details

3. Concluding sentence
